A winter private transfer from Calgary airport to Banff takes 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in good conditions and longer in weather. The vehicle is yours from $249.99 regardless of group size, runs 24 hours when scheduled services have stopped for the evening, carries ski and snowboard gear that shared seats cannot, and already has proper winter tires, which a Calgary rental almost certainly does not. Ski season runs from early November to April or May, with Sunshine and Lake Louise opening November 6 and Norquay November 7 for 2026/27.
Winter changes what a transfer is for. In July it is a convenience. In January it is the difference between arriving and sitting in the terminal at 11pm working out what to do, with four pairs of skis and a delayed flight behind you.
If you are still deciding whether to drive yourself, our winter travel guide covers road conditions and the tire rules. This page is about what a winter transfer actually involves.
Ski gear is the practical reason
A pair of skis, boots, poles and a week of warm clothes is a lot of volume per person. Four people with that is more than most vehicles carry comfortably, and shared services apply luggage allowances that oversized gear runs straight into.
A private vehicle is sized to the booking. Tell us how many ski bags, boards, boot bags and suitcases are coming and we send something that fits, rather than you finding out at the kerb. Our Sprinter exists largely for this reason: tall, easy to load, and built for gear.
Declare it when you book. Gear decides the vehicle as much as headcount does.
Winter flights run late
Calgary arrivals get delayed in winter, by weather here and weather wherever you took off from. That is normal and it is planned around rather than panicked about.
Send your flight number at booking. With it, arrivals are tracked: a flight landing 40 minutes early means the driver arrives earlier, and a two hour delay moves the pickup rather than leaving you to sort it out. Without it, the booking sits pinned to a time that may have nothing to do with when you walk out of the terminal.
This matters more in winter than at any other point in the year, and it is the field most often left blank.
Nothing scheduled runs late
Coaches and shared shuttles finish in the evening, and the seasonal services do not run at all in winter. On-It is mainly a summer weekend operation, and Parks Canada shuttles stop in October.
So if your flight lands after about 9pm, or leaves before dawn on the way home, a private transfer is realistically the only thing operating. We run 24 hours because ski trips and long-haul arrivals do not fit a nine to five timetable.
Winter tires, and what your rental has
Alberta has no province-wide winter tire law, so rental fleets in Calgary generally run all-season tires. Winter tires usually have to be requested specifically, may cost extra, and are not always available.
That is the part people discover at the counter at 11pm. A commercial operator running this corridor every day through winter is equipped for it as a matter of course. If you do rent, ask what tires the vehicle has before you book rather than after.
Note too that winter tires or chains are legally required from November 1 to March 31 on designated national park highways, including the Icefields Parkway, even though they are not mandated on the Trans-Canada to Banff.
It gets dark early
Sunset in Banff is around 4:30pm in December. An afternoon arrival means the drive happens in the dark, and mountain highways at night in winter are a different exercise from the same road in daylight.
If you have never driven on snow, this is the strongest argument against doing it on day one of a holiday with the family in the car and a flight’s worth of fatigue behind you.
Closures happen
The Trans-Canada between Calgary and Banff is divided and well maintained, and it closes sometimes anyway: avalanche control, collisions, heavy snow. Closures come with little notice and can last hours.
Nobody can route around a closed highway. What a local driver brings is knowing when conditions are turning, how long things usually take to clear, and what the realistic options are. Check 511 Alberta if you are driving yourself.
Getting to the hills once you are there
Ski season for 2026/27 opens November 6 at Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise, and November 7 at Mt Norquay, with Sunshine running into May.
Once you are in Banff, ski shuttles run several times daily to all three resorts and are free with a valid lift ticket. For a ski trip this removes most of the argument for a rental car, since you are driven to the hill and back every day anyway. You need transport to Banff and transport home, and very little in between.
One exception: those shuttles do not serve Nakiska in Kananaskis. Our Kananaskis guide covers that side.
When to book
Christmas and New Year are the tightest period of the winter, followed by Family Day weekend and school breaks. Vehicles that carry a group and its gear are the first to go.
Outside the holidays, winter is the one season where booking closer to the date is often fine. If your trip falls over the holidays, it is not.
Common questions
How long does the transfer take in winter?
1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in good conditions. Allow longer in snow, and build slack into any plan with a fixed start time at the far end.
How much is a private transfer from YYC to Banff?
From $249.99 for the vehicle rather than per person, so the cost per head falls as the group grows. Vehicles carry up to 24.
Can you carry skis and snowboards?
Yes. Declare gear when booking so the right vehicle is assigned. Skis, boards, boot bags and oversized luggage all affect which vehicle fits.
What happens if my flight is delayed by weather?
If you gave a flight number, the arrival is tracked and the pickup moves with the flight. This is the main reason to provide it.
Do you run at night in winter?
Yes, 24 hours. Scheduled coaches and shared shuttles stop in the evening, so late arrivals and pre-dawn departures are private transfer territory.
Do your vehicles have winter tires?
Vehicles running this corridor through winter are equipped for the conditions. A Calgary rental usually has all-season tires unless you specifically requested otherwise.
When does ski season start in Banff?
For 2026/27, Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise open November 6 and Mt Norquay November 7, tentatively. Norquay runs to April and Sunshine into May.
Do I need a park pass in winter?
Yes. A Parks Canada pass is required year round to enter Banff National Park, including as a passenger.
